I don’t know about epsom salts, but our doctor prescribed a teaspoon of mineral oil each night for our 8 year old girl. She has suffered from these same symptoms her whole life. We give it to her at night. She just takes it straight down. We call it her slimy medicine. It works by keeping her intestines lubricated. No matter how many fruits, veggies, bran bars, etc….. we gave to her - no relief. The mineral oil works, and it is all natural as well. Good luck!!
Give him veggies and cereal with bran in it.
You should probably speak with your physician about the matter, if he frequently suffers from cramps and constipation, he could have a medical condition or blockage. Better safe than sorry!!!
good luck!
NO. Do not give a child epsom salts. There are children’s bowel stool softeners that are gentler and don’t affect the body’s fluids. Epsom salts pull water out of the child’s body. Soften the stool with something like ‘colace’. Then as the other answerer stated, give him lots of fresh vegetables, increase his intake of WATER (not sodas or juices), and increase exercise. The other thing that helps and isn’t toxic is prunes. They come in dried snack sizes now in the the supermarket, or you can stew them, or give him a glass of prune juice everymorning. These help. Bran helps as well. YOu can put bran flakes or bran buds in hamburger meat, or in many recipes so that your family won’t even notice. Adults need 20grams of fiber per day. We dont’ get nearly that.
IF a child of eight has no bowel illnessses (per MD) then water, exercise, and fresh bulky food, should give him proper bowel health. Avoid too many processed foods - eg give him an apple versus applesauce.
Happy poops to you!!
No, it’s not safe. Give him a healthy diet and allow him to drink only water. Use Milk of Magnesia once a day for up to a week to get things started. Talk to a doctor if it lasts. They may tell you to use laxatives or enemas for a limited time.
Yes it is safe. You can give 1 to 2 level teaspoons in an 8 ounce glass of water. Don’t exceed more than 2 doses in one day. No more than that. He will probably get a bowel movement within an 1/2 to 6 hours.
Good luck!
Mineral oil pulls the nutrients out of the body. Epsom salt taste nasty but give him something to eat or drink after. It is made mostly of magnesium, so it is very calming. It will not make you dehydrated. Make sure to continue drinking liquids. Juices with no sugar added.
I would say no that would be very harsh on his tummy get professional advice
Be very wary what you give your son, without medical advice. For stomach cramps try babies Gripewater (ie Nurse Harvey’s or Woodwards…. about two pounds a bottle. What is he eating though, to cause the stomach cramps? Make a note of his diet. Don’t be cross if he is eating something he is hiding from you. Only by keeping track, can you illustrate to him what it is that may be causing his stomach cramps. If you give him skimmed or semi-skimmed milk - cut that out first. I cannot drink it at all. It gives me stomach pains and bloats my stomach. This happens with other friends too. Full cream milk, no problem at all. They use a chemical to extract the cream, and a residue of the chemicals are left in the skimmed & semi-skimmed milk.
Constipation-wise. I have found in an Iranian Shop, packets of frozen spinach. In the packet are in small frozen pieces, like tiny bird’s nests. I use one or two in pasta water, or in anything I happen to be cooking. There is no taste at all and constipation will disappear. Spinach is high in iron, which is excellent for the family. There is Iranian writing on the packet, but it also says in English … Chopped Spinach. It is economical to use and costs about 60p a packet.
