This forum is for opinions, but when your child's life is in danger I would suggest a professional opinion. There are just too many illnesses going around that can threaten a child's life. I had strep (scarlet fever they called it back then) on my skin, it was little red bumps, looked like a rash on my skin it started on the back of my neck then spread everywhere else. Or it could be an alergy, are you rubbing lotion on him? maybe he has a bad alergy to it. Call the docs.
