I work at a switchboard for a major university and hospital. We are based on the university side but for some reason the callers expect us to know all medical questions. This one caller wanted to verify that hemroids are indeed treated by gastroenterology doctors. Is this true?

I have been diagnosed with IBS about 6 years ago and I am intolerant to a lot of foods. I recently started swimming regularly (3 times/week) and saw big improvement in all my symptoms. Any idea why?
Is it only psycosomatic? Thanks x
Sorry, IBS = irritable bowel syndrome

Nobody really knows what that is, but GPs tend to diagnose it when they haven’t got a clue what’s wrong with you!
I didn’t intend to insult neither the patients or the doctors. But it is frustrating to see that doctors talk about a syndrome they don’t really know about. For example, I noticed my symptoms get worse just before my period, I asked my GP and she said that was new to her. But later I found publications supporting my observations….

I have changed about 3-4 doctors, before you ask! One gastroenterologist here suggested psycotherapie and / or hypnosis….
Could be interesting, but would it help??
Hi Nancy

thanks for the thought!
Yes, I know I am not celiac and that I am intolerant to lactose and a lot of other things (long list…). The problem is that it is almost impossible to avoid all these foods as some are hidden (like spices, E-numbers, etc) so inevitably sometimes the symptoms pop up again. This list tends to grow every fem months, too!
I know I have to avoid these items of food, my question was related to why is swimming helpful, as physiologically i couldn’t make a link.
Thanks for your help, anyway!

my leg is really hurting this happens a lot when i have tummy ache im going to have swabs done at my doctors but they cant see a connection with my leg.painkillers are not working i have pain in my pelvic area do you have any idea what could be the problem?

My friend has Crohn’s disease, it has evolved rapidly. He now has ulcers in his mouth, severe bloody diarrhea, extreme abdominal pain and there are many ulcers in his colon along with an extremely inflamed small intestine.

The doctors said they will have to remove his colon and have a colostomy bag. He is only 29 and feels this will ruin his life and has refused to have it removed.

My question is, if he doesn’t have his colon removed what will happen? Will the pain just carry on or will something even more serious happen?

My girlfriend has had stomach problems for two years, and has been unsuccessfully checked out by doctors over and over again, but we are finding the problem may be simpler than we thought as it is temporaraly cured by mylanta. What herbal medicines would you recomend to aid in healing her digestive system?

and the doctors twice, all they have done is send me home wth : gaviscon, omerprazole and paracetemol…its been two weeks and its not worked whatsoever, all the doctors say is give it time….i cant take the pain anymore…someone please help me.

On lansoprazole for gastric reflux and recently been given propranolol for severe anxiety attacks. Taking them together on my doctors advice. However, the panick attacks often cause me to gasp for breath and as a result I have strained my chest muscles. Can I take Ibuprofen for the swelling whilst I am taking these other drugs? Confused and in bad pain!

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis last year. I want to know if anyone has suggestions or advice for dealing with relapses.

Doctors often say that diet has little to do with the disease and does not affect remission and relapse, but I find this hard to believe.

Any suggestions are welcome.

I’ve heard Dr Andrew Weil say that people can survive on intervenous feeding of glucose alone for quite some time but very little time on fructose. I believe he was implying that fructose is an inferior sugar.
But isn’t the body’s digestive system able to convert fructose into glucose in any event? Any savy nutritionists or doctors out there who can give me insight?
